Traineeship Vs Apprenticeship

What's the difference?

To quickly answer the question…

A main difference between a Traineeship and an Apprenticeship is the level of time required. Apprenticeships can last 3-4 years, whereas a Traineeship can last between six weeks and six months with 100-240 hours of work experience.

An apprenticeship lets you learn on the job and you’ll be employed by the employer for the term of the apprenticeship. This can turn into a full-time job should there be a vacancy after the apprenticeship has been completed.

A Traineeship can be viewed as pre-apprenticeship training. Perhaps you don’t have the GCSEs or job experience needed to start your dream apprenticeship, that’s where a Traineeship can help you. With a Traineeship, the employer agrees to support the young person for the term of the Traineeship via a work placement, which could lead to an apprenticeship. In the classroom, the Trainee attains the relevant skills, qualifications and qualities that will help them secure an apprenticeship, a job, or maybe a determination to continue in education.

What are Traineeships?

A Traineeships programme is a course which comprises of education, training and experience, preparing individuals for the world of work. The content of the training is designed to meet the needs of each individual who might not have enough experience in employment, and/or hasn’t been able to achieve GCSE results in English and/or Maths. Traineeships are delivered as a partnership between employers and training providers, and the program can last from six weeks to six months.

Who are Traineeships for?

You can take part in our Traineeship program if:-

1. You are eligible to work in England.

2. You are unemployed or don’t have enough work experience.

3. You are aged 16-24 and have not yet gained a level 2 qualification.

The fantastic benefits of a Traineeship include a work experience placement which could lead into a suitable progression (employment part/full time or level 2 & 3 apprenticeships), as well as further support with English and Maths should you require this.

Although this course does not offer money of any sort, sometimes support for travel/meals can be re-reimbursed should you qualify for this.

Traineeships are part of the same family as apprenticeships, but just one step before. Finishing a Traineeship can get you ready for your apprenticeship and they are specifically designed to provide trainees with the skills and work experience required to move them into employment or an apprenticeship.

What are Apprenticeships?

Now apprenticeship schemes are available within a wide range of industries at three different levels; Intermediate, Advanced and Higher, lasting between 12 to 48 months. Typically, this involves full-time or part-time work with an employer which provides ample opportunity to learn all the characteristics of a specific trade. 

Some of the recognised benefits are: –

1. Starting valuable steps towards a rewarding career, working alongside experienced staff.

2. Earning a wage and entitlement to holiday pay.

3. Attaining a day release to complete study relating to the role.

4. Receiving a nationally recognised qualification.
